Norway's week-long Easter vacation underway

alt

A large part of the Norwegian population seem to be able to take a week off at Easter, and the so-called "Easter Exodus" (Påskeutfarten) began already early Friday afternoon, creating long line-ups on the roads.

Most were probably heading for their mountain cabin or a ski resort, to capture the last opportunity for a skiing holiday, while others wanted to open their seaside cabin ("hytte") for the season, looking forward to a warm spring and summer.

And there were others who just wanted to get "back home" to family and friends for Easter Week.

However, many, particularly in the North, were tired of snow and the dark winter and have headed for warmer shores.

There will be another "exodus" on Wednesday, as Holy Thursday is also a religious and public holiday in Norway, as is Good Friday.

Those of us who remain at home, especially in the larger cities, will find that many shops, restaurants and other service spots, are closed the whole week.
