According to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference will provide an arena for  a  fact-based discussion of the humanitarian and developmental consequences associated with a nuclear weapon detonation.

The conference will be opened on Monday 4 March by Espen Barth Eide, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
