Over the past two years, nearly 500 convicted and expelled criminals have returned to Norway, where they have been apprehended again, Aftenposten reports.(Photo: Justice Minster Grete Faremo)
Since he was expelled from Norway for life, his sentence was reduced by 300 days.
However, a few months after he had been transported out of the country, he was back again, and during only a few weeks in 2012 he had carried out a series of break-ins in Oslo, worth more than NOK one million.
He had obtained a false passport and taken a new name, and slipped through the police control.
Very few of the foreign criminals who break the re-entry ban will receive any punishment at all, the newspaper writes.
And police lawyer Kjell Johan Abrahamsen of the Vestfold police precinct believes the punsihment for returning is too low.
- The criminals take a calculated risk, because they know that if they are caught, the sentence is low. And they are not afraid of a jail sentence, because conditions in Norwgian jails are good., Abrahamsen says.
Justice Minister Grete Faremo is now considering an increase of the punishment for breaking the ban on re-entry, Aftenposten writes.
