US law enforcement sources, quoted by CBS, say the young man who carried out the shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut in December last year was inspired by Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik (photo).
The sources say Adam Lanza was motivated by violent video games and a strong desire to kill more people than another infamous mass murderer.
They say Lanza saw himself as being in direct competition with Anders Breivik, a Norwegian man who killed 77 people in July 2011.
Bombing a downtown government building in Oslo, Breivik killed eight persons, before moving to a nearby island where hunted down and fatally shot 69 people, mostly teenagers attending a Labour Party political summer camp.
