A 47-year-old Rwandan man, accused of participating in the Rwanda genocide in 1994, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison by an Oslo court, for mass murders he was involved in during the genocide.
The 47-year-old has appealed the verdict.
Sadi Bugingo, who has lived in Norway since 2001, was found guilty of his involvement in the killing of between 1,000 and 2,000 people during the Rwanda genocide.
"The Court finds reason to believe that the accused was part of planning murders that were part of the Rwanda genocide," says District Court judge Jonas Madsø. The 21-year-sentence demanded by prosecutors is the maximum available in Norway.
His defense attorney, Harald Stabell, is not surprised that his client immediately chose to appeal the verdict. "He has claimed his innocence throughout the entire trial. He says that he has nothing to do with the genocide," Stabell tells NRK.
Bugingo has resided in Norway for the past 12 years, but is not a Norwegian citizen. He lived with his family in Bergen and worked as a cleaner while hiding for the police, until he was arrested in May 2011.
