Centre Pompidou may buy Munch's self portrait

Centre Pompidou in Paris wants to buy a self portrait of Edvard Munch - a photograph that he took of himself at his home at Ekely in Norway in 1930.

Centre Pompidou recently hosted the exhibition The Modern Eye in Paris, which is allegedly the reason why the museum now wants to buy the photograph (the photo used in this article is not the photo for sale). Munch's will, however, has made the transaction more complicated.

The city council emphasizes that Munch's will does open up for a sale, but that the access to transactions of this king is quite limited.

Meanwhile, the director of the Munch Museum, Stein Olav Henrichsen, thinks the sale is very lucrative. He points out that there are five copies of the photograph, which will ensure that the museum's collection of photos is not be reduced. What is important to the museum, he says, is to see Munch represented by a photograph at Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Henrischen explains that Munch will be featured as part of a key collection of photos, which can lift Munch's position as an innovative modernist, as well as make him stand out in photographic history.

The Centre Pompidou has suggested a maximum price of EUR 30 000 (approximately NOK 220 000) for the photo. The case has now been forwarded to the Committee on Culture and Education, where it will be processed before the City Council makes a decision about whether or not the photo will be sold.
