The high standard of living in Norway is tempting to organized criminals, and could be one of the reasons the number of break-ins has increased by seven percent this year.
So far, there have been 25,107 reported residential break-ins in Norway in 2012, according to figures from Finance Norway (FNO). That's an increase of seven percent compared to the same period last year.
Whereas 2011 actually showed a decrease in the number of break-ins, there has been an average of 2,800 monthly reported incidents so far this year. Insurance companies also feel the impact of an increase, and have paid out NOK 390 million in connection with theft and break-ins.
"It's based on these numbers that we fear that the decline we saw in 2011 may only be temporary," says head of communication Leif Osland in Finance Norway (FNO).
According to Osland there are big challenges associated with Eastern European crime in Norway.
"Groups of foreign criminals and their activity in Norway fluctuate. Norwegians keep more valuables on their properties, and the Norwegian level of wealth is tempting for many groups of organized criminals," says Osland.
