The Norwegian Police Officers' Association (Politiets Fellesforbund) have at their annual meeting voted in favour of arming the Norwegian police.
The vote was 73 in favour of a general permit to carry arms, while 53 voted against.
The vote went against the proposal from the union board, that the Norwegian police should remain unarmed.
Today, in some police precincts, a limited number of police cars are equipped with arms which are locked in a compartment. The police chief will issue permit to the use of arms when this is deemed necessary.
The right wing Progress Party (FrP) is the only political party which is in favour of arming the Norwegian police.
Both the Conservative Party (Høyre) and Prime Minister Stoltenberg's Labour Party (AP) are opposed to a general arming of the police, Aftenposten reports.
