Rafto Prize 2012 presented Sunday

The winner of the 2012 Rafto Prize, Bassey from Nigeria was presented with the prize at an awatrd ceremony at the National Stage in Bergen on Sunday.

 

After the ceremony there was a torchlight procession.

Rafto Prize Committee sad the 2012 Rafto Prize was awarded to Nnimmo Bassey in recognition of his long-term fight for people’s right to life, health, food and water in a world affected by complex and threatening climate change and mass environmental destruction. Through his rights based work and criticism of prevailing systems, Bassey has shown how human rights can help mitigate the effects of these changes.

- My engagement in the struggle for environmental rights as human rights has spanned two decades thus far. My people say “the environment is our life,” and I totally agree. This award comes as en encouragement, and as a huge challenge, because the struggle continues until victory is won not just in Nigeria or Africa, but globally, said Bassey.
