Drastic reduction in number of dairy farms

The number of dairy farms in Norway has been reduced by 12,000 since the year 2000. By the end of 2012 there will be less than 10,000 dairy farms left, experts believe.

This means that three Norwegian dairly farms have stopped production daily over the past 12 years, according to figures from the Norwegian Agricultural Authority (NAA), quoted by Nationen.

- Dairy farming is the cornerstone of Norwegian agriculture, and we must all pitch in to turn his development around, says head of the Norwegian Farmer and Smallholder Associaation, Merete Furuberg.

- Low profilability coupled with the offer of far better paid jobs outside farming have led to the closure of dairy farms. It is labour-demanding to produce, and Norway is a high cost nation, says Furuberg.
