Speaking at the Nobel Peace Prize press conference in Oslo on Friday, one of the winners, Tawakkul Karman said: "This prize honors us, but also gives us a lot of responsibility."
"It was the women of Liberia that decided they wanted a change, and it is thanks to them that I am here today," said Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, when she introduced the conference. She became Africa’s first female president when she was elected in 2005. The second award winner, Leymah Gbowee, agreed with Sirleaf. "The first thing many people have thought about they talk about conflicts in Africa is women as victims," she told reporters. "The last thing they have thought about is women that fight for peace." Karman is the least known of the three women, and also the youngest Peace Prize-winner in history. "The times when women were suppressed are over," she told reporters. "You chose women that are leaders because you know that the times is over when women are victims." The journalist has fought for women’s right to proper nutrition and to not be married away as child brides in her home country, Yemen.
