The three winners of the Nobel Peace Prize 2011 arrived in Oslo Thursday, and will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at Saturday’s ceremony at Oslo City Hall.
Leymah Gbowee was the first one to arrive at Gardermoen Thursday. "I feel happy, honored, and humble for being here," she said, while admitting that she does prefer the African sun to the chilly winter weather in Oslo.
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 was awarded jointly to President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Yemeni journalist Tawakkol Karman for their work in advancing women’s rights and the role of women in peace building efforts. According to the Nobel Committee, the three women – two Liberians and a Yemeni – are recognized for their "non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work".
All three winners arrived on separate flights Thursday. Johnson-Sirleaf was the second one to land in Oslo Thursday afternoon, where she was greeted by the leader of the Nobel Committee, Torbj¯rn Jagland, and the director of the Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad. "I am so proud. We have fought for so long for peace and democracy, and this is a wonderful acknowledgement of our work," said Johnson-Sirleaf. Lundestad is also looking forward to this weekend’s events. "These women are amazing," he told reporters. "I think the next few days are going to be a lot of fun."
