Norwegian foreign aid funds worth nearly NOK 30 million never reached their intended projects due to corruption, according to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (Photo: Minister of Development Erik Solheim)
The Ministry has looked into 253 reported cases, and found mismanagement in 37 of them. Of these, 12 have been reported to the police. 12 of the 37 cases were discovered in projects in Africa.
From 2007 until August this year, the Ministry has received NOK 23.9 million from various aid organisations in compensation for the mismanagement of aid funds, NRK reports.
- Corruption is unacceptable, and means that the funds do not reach the projects for which they were intended, says head of investigations, Eirik Glenne to public broadcaster NRK.
- Corruption with foreign aid funds is stealing from the poor in the world. This is totally unacceptable. This is why we must have the strictest control systems in the world, in order to discover breech of agreements, says Minister of International Development, Erik Solheim.
