Suu Kuy: - Norway should get involved in Burma

Burma opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi says Norway should get involved in Burma, as long as it does not mean any form of recognitiion of the military regime's actions.

Suu Kyi (65), who has been held in house arrest in 15 of the last 20 years, and was released last Saturday, said this in her very first interview with Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

She feels she has close relations to Norway, even if she has never been here.

She has received the Rafto Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize, but was not able to travel to Oslo to receive it, as she feared she would not be able to return to Burma.

Suu Kyi believes the sanctions against her country, also supported by Norway, should now be reconsidered. - I want to know if they are harmful to our people, she says.

She lso believes that it would be right for the Norwegian authorities to change course, and get involved rather than stay away.

- I believe getting involved is a good thing as long as it does not mean any form of recognition of the military junta's actions, Aung San Suu Kiy says.
