Russia's President Dimitrij Medvedev will on Monday begin an official visit to Norway, a visit which will be followed with interest, as many important issues will be on the agenda in his talks with Norwegian leaders.
Already, it has been reported that when President Medvedev meets with Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, they will approve the establishment of an non-visa borderzone between Norway and Russia.
The agreement open up for special borderzone passes and easy border crossing for 40.000 Russians and 9000 Norwegians, living within 30 kilometers distance from the 196 kilometre long Norwegian-Russian border.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre points to the fact that the Schengen-agreement opens up for such regulations in border areas. When this agreement is effectuated it will be among the first areas along the Schengen border where there is established a borderzone, according to Støre.
The Norwegian Foreign Minister says to NRK that in time, travel regulations between Norway and Russia will be similar to the border regulations between the Nordic states.
Another issue which may find a solution during President Mevedev's vist is the 40-year long unsolved dispute of deciding where the dividing line betwen the two nations should be drawn in the Barents Sea.
