Weekend: Letters to the EditorFirst, let me apologize. I hate to admit it, but it is becoming clear to me that it is no longer possible to answer all your letters personally. Not that I get all of them to my desk, anyway. Only a sorry few appear in this coloumn. However, I guess this is what happens when we grow bigger.
First, let me apologize. I hate to admit it, but it is becoming clear to me that it is no longer possible to answer all your letters personally. Not that I get all of them to my desk, anyway. Only a sorry few appear in this coloumn.
However, I guess this is what happens when we grow bigger. And let me assure you, your letters are all read, and we welcome all the comments and queries that come our way.The first letter we picked today comes from
Anna in California:
-My husband and I have friends who live in Norway and I've just recently been learning how to use the internet.
-Somewhere somehow I stumbled upon the Norway Post. I am so glad that I did. I've been able to look at the news and current events and the classifieds.
-I was very disturbed by the train wreck that accrued a couple of weeks ago in Norway and was very concerned that my friend may be involved.
-I e-mailed him and his wife and they responded. I was so relieved that they were ok, but still very sad for the accident. I pray for the families.
-It may seem silly to some people that I'm concerned about people so far away who are not family, but I care very much for my friends. And to able to know what is going on in Norway, I feel a little closer to them even if we don't talk often.
-They are expecting a baby the end of May, so your beautiful country will have another wonderful person to care for. I'm very excited for them.
Thank you for your wonderful paper.
I truly appreciate it.
From America, Anna Lee
-----
Thank you for your kind words.
Let me use this opportunity to ask if it would be possible when you write us, to tell us what you appreciate most about our service, and also list one or two things that you would like to to find, or see more of in Norway Post. That would be very helpful for us at this stage. Thank you!
We end today with a short letter from a young reader in the US somewhere:
-I am writing this letter for a friend. her name is. Louella and she is from Norway.
-She would like a copy of. THE NORWEGIAN PRAYER,
or the blessing of the food.
-I would also like it translated in English. This would make her very happy. I want to thank you kindly for any help you can give me, and Louella thanks you too.
JEANNE
And I wrote back:
Dear Jeanne,
It was kind of you to want to help your friend with her Norwegian Table Prayer!
Problem is, I don't know which one Louella is used to!!
Anyway, here are a couple of versions for a starter:
1:
Aa, du som metter liten fugl, velsign vaar mat, O Gud!
Oh,You, who feed the little birds, bless our food, O God!
2:
Gledens Herre, vaer vaar gjest, ved vaart bord, i dag!
Gjoer vaart maaltid til en fest, etter ditt behag!
Lord of happiness, be our guest, at our table today!
Make our meal a feast, according to your pleasure!
Both these may also be sung.
The double vowels: aa, oe and ae, are Norwegian vowels which are not found in the English alphabet.
Good luck with the tunes!
Best regards!
We end with our usual wish for all of you
for a restful weekend!
Don't forget to test yourself on our weekly contest, and why not show others
The Doorway to Norway!
Sincerely
