The Kon-Tiki Museum

The Kon-Tiki Museum is a private foundation, which houses a range of boats and artefacts from Thor Heyerdahl Here you can see the original Kon-Tiki raft (1947) with a 30 foot whale shark underneath...statues and a secret family cave from Easter Island (1956)...the papyrus boat Ra II (1970)...and an exciting collection of archaeological finds from Easter Island, East Polynesia, Galapagos and Peru.Tied to the museum is an Institute for Pacific Archaeology and Cultural History, which carry out our own research as well as supporting other scientists with different grants. In the 1980th and -90th the Kon-Tiki Museum research staff returned to Easter Island. Alongside an attempt to find out how the giant moai statues were transported, excavations were carried out which focused on the island
