July 22nd inspires exhibition in New York

Parallax Views, an exhibition at .NO gallery in New York, which opens Friday, explores the underpinnings of the terrorist bombing and shootings in Oslo and at Utøya on July 22nd 2011.

International curator Küan Jeff Baysa has invited several artists to display their works at the exhibition, which opens in Manhattan on January 6th. All the artists have resided in Norway, but none of them are Norwegian.

Their works are "lyrical, metaphorical, even oblique ways of addressing the highly charged and prickly issues," according to a press release by .NO.

Concepts explored in the exhibition include the homeland versus the adopted land, and issues of rejecting or retaining cultural roots with another cultural hegemony. Works focus on the second or third generation of immigrants, and ask questions like "what is cultural diversity within the Norwegian context? What are unspoken issues?" according to the curator.

Parallax Views is on from January 6-29 at .NO, a non-profit gallery on the Lower East Side.
