There has been a larger decrease than increase in people's use cultural offerings the past four years.
Theatres and art exhibitions are among the cultural venues that have experienced the largest fall in visitors. Only 45 percent of people age 9-79 have visited a theater, musical or cabaret in the past twelve months, compared to 50 percent in year 2000.
"We are starting to lose people's interest in theater. What should be alarming is that the young people, age 16-24 years, are the audience in which we see the largest decrease," says Agnes Moxnes, cultural commentator at state broadcaster NRK.
Among the elderly, however, there has been an increase in use. Whereas only ten percent of the age group 67-79 years old visited a movie theatre in 1991, that number had tripled and increased to 32 percent in 2012.
The statistics also show that women and well-educated people with high incomes are the largest consumers of cultural offerings.
