May 8th - Liberation Day Today, May 8th is Liberation Day in Norway. It Marks the date in 1945 when the German occupying forces surrendered. It is also Veterans' Day.
May 8th is an official Flag Day, and there are cremonies to mark the day at war memorials and other public places. War veterans and soldiers who have participated in various UN peace operations are honoured with medals. In Oslo, the honours ceremony is held at Akershus Castle. (The Norway Post)
