Norwegian Immigration Exhibit in Minnesota

altThe exhibition "New Land, New Life: Norwegian Immigration in Minnesota 1825-1925" shows highlights from the Norwegian immigration to Minnesota, and is on through June 20, 2013.

The exhibition is hosted by the Ramsey County Historical Society, and features the history, culture and first-hand accounts of the lives of Norwegian immigrants to Minnesota and St. Paul.

Topics from the exhibit include urban life, churches and congregations, fine art, folk art, and farm settlements and homesteading. St Paul Sons of Norway Synnove Nordkap lodge has researched and developed both text and photographs, which has resulted in a 20-panel exhibit.

Several cultural and social events are scheduled to run concurrently with the exhibit, including visits by author Candace Simar, who will discuss her historical novels about Norwegian immigrants displaced during the Dakota War of 1862.

Member and volunteers will also demonstrate cultural skills such as woodcarving, Norwegian knitting and Hardanger embroidery. The Hardanger Fele group will play a concert, and the Psalmodikon group will play and display a psalmodikon.

The exhibit is free and open to the public through June 20, 2013. It takes place in the Ramsey County Historical Society Gallery in St. Paul. The exhibition is underwritten by grants from the Minnesota Clean Water, Land and Legacy Fund and the Sons of Norway foundation.
