Government money for a new Munch museum

altThe Government has offered to contribute towards building a new Munch museum in Oslo - if the local politicians can come to an agreement about where the museum should be built.

"The Government is willing to pay half the money needed to build a new Munch museum," says Minister of Culture Hadia Tajik (Ap/Labor Party). But first, the City of Oslo will be required to hand in a proposal that is supported by a city council majority.

This means that the politicians in Oslo will have to an agreement about where the new Munch museum should be located - a much-heated debate for several years. Tajik also tells NRK that an application has to include estimates for both property costs and infrastructure.

The original goal was for the politicians to come to an agreement before Munch's 150th birthday on December 12, 2012, but a site for the new museum building has not yet been established,

Tajik has scheduled a meeting with the Cultural City Councilor Hallstein Bjercke (Venstre/Liberal Left Party) next week, to hopefully start a dialogue that can lead to new plans and a new home for the Munch collections.
