Norway lacks coastal Weather Radar

Norway is the only European nation that lacks a Weather Radar service that covers the coastline. A radar of this type would make it possible to better forecast the quick build-up of strong winds on their way towards the coast, says Director Anton Eliassen of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (NMI) to Aftenposten. In 1995 Parliament asked NMI to work out plans for a chain of weather radar stations along the coast. The plan, which was presented in 1997, calls for 10 such stations, but funds have not been appropriated. (NRK) Rolleiv Solholm
