New Central Bank Governor

Head of Statistics Norway, Øystein Olsen (58) has been appointed new Governor of the Central Bank of Norway (Norges Bank), replacing Svein Gjedrem who has served two periods.

Olsen has been appointed for a 6 year period, and will take office on 1 January 2011.

Øystein Olsen is an economist, and graduated from the University of Oslo in 1977.

Olsen was Managing Director for Statistics Norway from January 2005, and has also led the economy section of the Department of Finance. He has also done research at the University of California at Berkeley.

Announcing the appointment, Finance Minister Sigbjørn Johnsen said:

- With Øystein Olsen as new Central Bank Governor we have a particularly competent head of Norges Bank. I know Olsen as a well-informed economist with broad insight, and I am sure he will do a good job as Central Bank Governor, Finance Minister Johnsen said.
