Nordic surveillance of Icelandic airspace

At Iceland's request, Sweden and Finland say they are ready to contribute to the surveillance of Icelandic airspace, together with Norway.

- I am pleased to see that the Nordic cooperation on foreign and security policy is tighter than ever, says Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

Norway has already for some time taken part in the surveillance.

At a meeting in Helsinki on Wednesday, the Nordic foreign ministers agreed on a joint declaration, stating how the Nordic cooperation should be strengthened further.

- This is an expression for solidarity and a natural extesion of the close cooperation on training which the Swedish, Norwegiaan and Finnish airforces have already established in the North, Eide says.

The Nordic foreign ministers also agreed to establish a Nordic communications network, and to find joint premises for the Nordic embassies and offices in Yanguon, Islamabad, Hanoi, Dhaka and Reykjavik.
