High electricity production and net exports

Norwegian electricity production in August was 5.4 per cent higher than in August last year, and the second highest production level recorded in that month since the electricity statistics started in 1979.

Norway’s export of power totalled 2 554 GWh in August 2012, whereas imports came to 44 GWh. This gave a net export of 2 510 GWh. In the same month last year the net export totalled 2 148 GWh. Exchange of power between countries is determined by differences in generation and the consumption situation and prices, in addition to the capacity of the power lines.

The high electricity generation and the high net export may be seen in conjunction with a large amount of water in the Norwegian reservoirs and power system, Statistics Norway reports.

According to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, the reservoir filling was 86.4 per cent at the beginning of August (week 31). At the end of the month (week 35) the filling was 88.1. This is 9.1 percentage points higher than the same week in 2011.
