Airlines hold Avinor responsible for financial loss

Norwegian Airlines demand that Avinor (Norwegian Civil Aviation Administration) reimburses them for a NOK 100 million loss due to delays and cancelled flights this summer.

Statistics show that Oslo Airport Gardermoen had the most delays per flight of all airports in Europe during the month of July. The airlines now demand NOK 100 million in reimbursements from the state-owned limited company Avinor, which operates most civil airports in Norway.

NRK reports that Avinor had sent 58 air traffic controllers on holiday, while the airline traffic was at a standstill in Oslo. The company's vacation schedules were a contributing factor to the heavy delays over the summer, combined with increased air traffic, according to Eurocontrol.

Torbjørn Lothe, the director of air traffic in the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO) thinks that the Minister of Transportation should step in in order to avoid that the airlines end up paying the bill for Avinor's mistakes.

"When you buy a product that doesn't work the way it should, the price should be reduced," Lothe tells NRK.

Although Avinor is not legally obliged to pay any money back to the airlines, CEO Dag Falk-Petersen in Avinor tells NRK that he will still consider a refund. We are currently awaiting a formal request from the airlines, and will prepare to respond to this in the proper manner, Falk-Petersen explains.
