LinkedIn suffers security password leak

Computer experts warn that they have discovered evidence that shows that the social networking site LinkedIn has suffered a data breach, which compromised around 6,5 million passwords.

More than 500,000 Norwegians have profiles on LinkedIn, a popular online business network. The passwords were allegedly leaked on a Russian website for computer hackers, and there is a significant risk of identity theft and virus among users.

"We ask people to change their passwords as soon as possible," Senior Advisor Tone Bakås in the Norwegian Center for Information Security (NorSIS) tells NRK.

According to Bakås, many Norwegians use the same password on LinkedIn as they do on Facebook or their online banking. "Change password immediately, preferably to something a bit more complicated" she says.

Although the number of leaked passwords is only an estimate, Bakås tells NRK that she has spoken to several security experts that have found the passwords on hacker websites and blogs. Telenor's security department also warns users of the password leak via their Twitter account.

LinkedIn is one of the world's largest social networks. The service has more than 70 million users from more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
