More private housing constructed

The construction of new residential properties increased by almost 37 percent during the first eight months of 2011, compared to the same time period last year.

Between January and August, the Government granted permission to build 17,676 new residential properties in Norway. That’s a 36,8 percent increase, or more specifically, 4,763 new homes compared to 2010, according to numbers released by Statistics Norway (SSB).

In square feet, the increase means that Norwegians have a total of more than six million square meters of new homes. In August alone, 2,036 new construction projects were started, almost 400 more properties than the same month the previous year.

Whereas residential projects have skyrocketed, commercial construction went down by 6,7 percent in the same time period compared to 2010.
