The strong Norwegian Krone is forcing several Norwegian fish processing plants to close. Seafood exporters have problems in several key markets, NRK reports. 
The export value of Norwegian seafood dropped by NOK 521 million, to NOK 9.3 billion in the first quarter, compared with the same period last year. 
The overfishing of cod in the Barents Sea has been reduced from 80,000 tonnes in 2006 to around 40,000 tonnes in 2007, according to the Norwegian Fisheries Directorate. 
Russia has lifted the last restrictions on the import of herring and mackerel from Norway. This is the result of negotiations in Svolvaer this week. 
Fisheries Minister Helga Pedersen(photo) has warned the Norwegian fish processing industry that it must meet the strict standards for hygiene at its plants. 
Norway's oldest sardine canning factory, King Oscar, is being closed down, due to the weak USD exchange rate. The processing plant will be moved to Poland. 
Norwegian authorities claim that the World Trade Organization has ruled that the EU anti-dumping measure against Norwegian salmon is inconsistent with WTO rules on 22 separate grounds. The EU disagrees.
