There are no documented negative effects on fisheries from seismic acquisition, with the exception of gillnet fishing for saithe and haddock, the Institute of Marine Research concludes. 
The Norwegian fisheries industry as a whole stands to lose at least NOK one billion, after the EU 10 days ago banned Norwegian fishermen from catching mackerel in EU waters. 
In January and February, the Norwegian herring export had a turnover of NOK 1.2 billion. That is a 25 percent increase, or NOK 238 million, compared to the same period last year. 
The export of Norwegian seafood hit another record level in 2008. By the end of November the export value had reached NOK 35.4 billion, NOK 1.9 billion higher than at the same time in 2007.

In the county of Nordland the number of cases of illegal fishing reported to the police has nearly doubled over the past year. Nationwide there has also been a considerable increase, NRK reports.
