Norwegians top list of Online shoppers
More than 1,7 million Norwegians shopped online during the first half of 2011, buying a total of NOK 18 billion worth of merchandise. "We have seen several years of growth, but there is still lots of potential, both in terms of volume and the number of transactions," says Lars Friis in Dibz Payment Services to Ritzau news agency. Norwegians spent an average of NOK 7,425 per person on online purchases, whereas the United Kingdom came in second at an average of NOK 6,431 during the first two quarters. At the other end of the spectrum is Poland, with only NOK 2,285 per person. The majority of Norwegians’ purchases online, 43 percent, are in the vacation and travel category. 16 percent are spent on electronics, and nine percent on entertainment. Analysts list several possible reasons behind the expansive growth. People are less hesitant to pass on their credit card information online, and feel more confident that buying online is safe and convenient. A recent study shows that Norwegians are the second biggest spenders in Northern Europe when it comes to online shopping. 95 percent of internet users have made an online purchase during the past six months.
