Hunger strike against Norwegian mining company The indigenous people of the island of Mindoro in the Philippines has begun a hunger strike against the Norwegian owned mining company Intex Resources and its own government in protest against plans to start a nickel mine.
Intex' approximately 100 km2 concession area (9,720 ha) is located about 30 km from the coast in th e central part of Mindoro Island. While the development of a large nickel operation can bring much needed boost to the local economy, it also generates concern among the predominantly rural population, regarding the consequences for their traditional trades. The local authorities believe 20,000 will have to be relocated when the mining operation begin. Water resources located in the same area are used to irrigate 70 per cent of the farming land in the region. A large group of the Mangyan people, led by 25 priests have now gathered outside the Department of the Environment in the capital Manila. They say they will be on a hunger strike until the plans for the nickel mine are shelved. Norwegian investor Jens Ulltveit-Moe says Intex Resources has followed the guidelines for mining in the Philippines, and that it has the support of the government. He says the company is sensitive to the concerns of the Mangyans and is conducting a thorough information and education campaign to explain about the operation and is arranging public meetings to listen to local concerns and wishes. Intex says community support programs are also provided for the Mangyan communities, including installations for safe drinking water, improved sanitary systems as well as free medical services.
