The 24th Oslo Jazz Festival is on

After the traditional opening parade through Karl Johans Gate last Saturday, the Oslo Jazz Festival kicked off this week. Around 70,000 are expected to attend the festival, which ends Sunday.

The annual festival is hosted for the 24th time, and features 74 concerts by 360 musicians from 12 countries around the world. Ages range from Toots Thielemans, 88 years old, and a group of 11- and 12-year olds from Asker Jazz club. Both performed on the opening day.

This year the festival will also feature Magnolia Jazzband and Ketil Bjørnstad in Oslo Domkirke.

In addition, Norwegian classic violinist Arve Tellefsen will take the stage with the Norwegian Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (Kringkastingsorkesteret).

Other celebrity performers include Ornette Coleman and Cassandra Wilson. Finally, the festival puts on 24 free concerts.

The Oslo Jazz Festival is run by 200 volunteers, of all ages.
