Archaeological finds on new US embassy site
The find consists of foundations for a longhouse and fireplaces for heat and cooking, and indicates that farming took place in the area around Huseby at the time. - It is interesting that we can still discover pre-historic constructions in an area that has been developed to this extent, said project leader Margrete Figenschou Simonsen at Kulturhistorisk museum at the University of Oslo. She says this may be the first find of a longhouse within the municipality of Oslo. The team of archeologists will now have three weeks to complete excavations at the site. According to the Municipal government of Oslo, the new American Embassy has received initial clearance for construction. Further authorization is expected within the a few weeks. The embassy hopes to begin construction in 2011, but is still waiting for the green light from Washington. A request for tender has not yet been published.
