70 years since invasion of Norway
The modern 12.200 ton cruiser was at the head of a group of German warships sailing up the fjord towards Oslo that night, without navigation lights. The aim of the force was to invade the Norwegian capital and to capture the Royal Family and the Norwegian Government. The sinking of the cruiser by the Oskarsborg fortress made it possible for King Haakon and the Government to escape and organize the resistance. They later fled to England and the US. Two well placed shots from the old guns put the "Blücher" out of operation, and a few minutes later a torpedo from the fortress caused the huge vessel to overturn, blocking the only access by sea to the Norwegian capital. At least 500 persons perished in the sinking, which delayed the German occupation by several hours, forcing the Germans to make use of bombers and airborne troops to complete their mission.
