Norwegian aid to Malawi earthquake victims Print E-mail
The Norwegian Government is alllocating up to NOK five million in extra emergency aid to the victims of four earthquakes in the Karonga district in Malawi over the past two weeks.

The last quake hit Monday a week ago, and Malawi President Mutharika has declared the district a disaster area.

- We follow the development closely, and we are in close contact with the UN and NGOs carrying out emergency relief in the area, says International Development Minister Erik Solheim.

Contributions may also be needed from the UN emergency relief fund (CERF), to which Norway has contributed NOK 300 million so far this year.

More than 28,000 people are affected by the quakes, which have destroyed nearly 4,700 homes.
