Norwegian troops deployed in the Faryab province in Northern Afghanistan are engaged in fighting on average every third day. This is more frequently than most people at home are aware of, NRK reports.
The fighting, most often against Taliban forces or Afghan criminals, often last for several hours at a time, Stavanger Aftenblad writes. - The frequent clashes are due to the fact the the Afghan military now feel they are making progress. For this reason they more often attack insurgents, and the Norwegians who act as instructors and support, accompany them, says Colonel Kurt Arne Gimre to the newspaper. Gimre is head of the Norwegian contingent of around 500 Norwegian troops in the region. (NRK) Rolleiv Solholm |
