The national energy producer Statkraft and Shell plan to invest NOK 11 million on the development of ocean-based windmills off the Norwegian coast. The three-year project will be developed in cooperation with Lyse Kraft and the Norwegian Research Council, Bergens Tidende reports.

According to the newspaper, the four partners believe that ocean-based windpower-parks must be assessed as a suplement to land-based windmill-parks in the future.

Similar facilities are already in operation in shallow waters off the coast of Denmark, Sweden and Great Britain, but these windmills are built directly on the seabed.

In the North Sea the challenges will be much greater, with some of the world's most severe wind and wave conditions.
