Tour de Ski stage wins for Bjørgen and Northug
Bjørgen (31) had only managed second place in the two first Tour stages, but on Sunday she overtook her two strongests rivals, Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk and compatriot Therese Johaug on the last hill and won 1.6 seconds ahead of Kowalczyk, with Johaug in third. Norway's Kristin Størmer Steira placed fourth. Norway's Petter Northug extended his overall Tour lead by winning the men's 20km skiathlon at the Tour de Ski in Oberstdorf, Germany, on Sunday. The skiathlon event, made up of 10km classic and 10km freestyle skiing, was a close race between Northug, Swiss skier Dario Cologna and Russian Maxim Vylegzhanin, but the Norwegian crossed the finishing line first, 0.3 seconds ahead of Cologna, while Vylegzhanin was a further 0.3 seconds back. Norway's Marit Bjørgen secured the first stage win of this year's Tour de Ski, by outsprinting her rivals on the last stretch of the Skiathlon event on Sunday. Petter Northug won the men's skiathlon stage.
Saturday's "Skarverennet", the annual cross country ski-touring race with 12,220 participants in the Hallingskarvet mountains is often said to mark the end of the skiing season in Norway.
