Welcome to the Rolf Nesch Museum

An artist's treasure in the heart of Hallingdal. An inventive, creative European artist Rolf Nesch (1893 - 1975) was a respected artist when he fled from Nazi Germany to Norway in 1933. His creative contributions to the graphic art and his development of the material picture gave him international reputation. Rolf Nesch moved to Ål in 1951. This is why a separate museum exhibiting his art was established right here in Ål in 1993, the year he would have turned 100. The permanent collection in the museum includes prints, sculptures, material pictures as well as oil paintings, and shows a representative and exciting range of his artistical work in the period 1916 to 1972. How to get there: Nesch-museet is situated in centre of Ål, in the Ål Cultural Centre , approx. 3 hours from Oslo and 4,5 hours from Bergen. By train: All trains running between Oslo and Bergen stop at Ål station, 500 m from the Nesch museum. By car: Exit the road Rv7 to 'Ål sentrum', halfway between Gol and Geilo. The museum is situated approx 300 m from the Rv7, and is signposted 'Nesch-museet' and 'Ål kulturhus'. Parking facilities. Opening hours: Open all year Monday-Friday 0800-1600. Guides are available in the summer season. Booking of guided tours for groups all year round, tel.: + 47 32 08 11 00. Wheelchair facilities. Sale of art cards, books, posters etc. In the Ål Cultural Centre you'll also find the Tourist Information, library, art gallery, exhibition of traditional rosepainting (rosemaling) and local folk costumes as well as two theatres (for concerts, movies, theatre plays).
